A fiber mesh, much
like that on the back of vinyl, is heat welded (2) over the tear (1), flush to
the surface of the vinyl (as apposed to a surface patch). The vinyl weld
is then re-grained to blend with the surrounding surface and then vinyl/leather
dyes are applied (3) to match the area color, and ta da, you have new
life for less; usually around $65.
This process is a good alternative to
the cost of replacement if the cuts and tears are still small. If they
get too large then replacement might be a more cost effective way to go.
A rule of thumb: If the repair cost is 75% or more of the panel
replacement cost, you are better off with a replacement panel. Your
favorite upholsterer can help you with that. See the links to
Powertipps.com and look for "Anderson Upholstery".
